The Hemp Manifesto

Hemp has clothed civilisations for over 10,000 years — and for good reason.

It grows without pesticides, enriches the soil it's planted in, and uses a fraction of the water cotton demands.

At Moon N Lotus, we work with 100% natural hemp fabric to create Men's & Women's wear that are breathable in summer, warming in winter, stronger than cotton — and softer with every wash.

This is not fast fashion.

It's conscious clothing.

What Makes Hemp Fabric Different?

Grows Without Chemicals

Hemp requires no pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. It naturally repels pests and enriches the soil with every harvest cycle. Unlike conventional cotton, which demands vast quantities of water and synthetic inputs, hemp thrives with minimal environmental intervention — making it one of the most sustainable raw materials on Earth.

Strong & Durable

Hemp fibre is 8x stronger than cotton. It holds its shape, resists pilling, and only gets better with age and washing. This inherent durability means your garments evolve beautifully over time, developing character and softness with every wear — a true investment piece for the conscious consumer.

Breathable & Thermoregulating

Hemp fabric naturally regulates body temperature — keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter without synthetic intervention. Combined with its natural antibacterial properties, hemp inhibits bacterial growth and keeps garments fresher for longer, reducing the need for frequent washing.

Fully Biodegradable

At end of life, hemp fabric returns to the earth — leaving no microplastics, no landfill burden, no trace. This premium sustainable textile combines luxury with purpose, delivering garments that feel soft while supporting regenerative agriculture and reducing your environmental footprint. Investing in hemp means choosing a wardrobe staple that honours both your skin and the planet.

Process

From Seed to Fabric

A process rooted in respect — for the earth, and for you.

Step 01

Sown Naturally

Hemp seeds are planted without pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. The plant grows fast — ready to harvest in just 90–120 days.

Step 02

Harvested by Hand

Stalks are cut and left to ret naturally in the field, allowing moisture and microbes to loosen the fibres gently over time.

Step 03

Fibre Extraction

The outer bast fibres are separated from the woody core through a process called decortication — mechanical, chemical-free, and precise.

Step 04

Spun & Woven

Clean hemp fibres are spun into yarn and woven into fabric — creating a textile that is dense, breathable, and built to last.

Step 05

Powerloom Hemp

Hemp yarn is woven on powerlooms with care, bringing strength and consistency to every length of fabric while preserving its natural texture and breathability.

Why us

Why Moon n Lotus

We were among the early Indian labels to work with certified plant-based regenerated fibres, creating thoughtful pieces from materials derived from things like rose petals, orange peels, bamboo, hemp and more. We source thoughtfully, produce in small batches and increasingly make pieces only as demand requires. Even our fabric remnants are given a new purpose — reimagined as accessories, bags, childrenswear and more. For us, conscious fashion is not about making claims. It is about making better choices, consistently.

"Hemp has clothed humans for thousands of years. We're not reinventing it — we're finally giving it the respect it deserves."

— — Pamita Seth, Founder, Moon n Lotus

Care

Caring for Your Hemp

Wash Cool

Hand Wash or machine wash on a gentle cycle at 30°C or below. Hemp fibres are strong but prefer cool water to maintain their natural texture.

Skip the Dryer

Air dry in shade wherever possible. Avoid tumble drying on high heat — it can cause shrinkage and weaken the fibre over time.

Iron with Steam

Hemp can wrinkle naturally. Use a medium-heat steam iron while slightly damp for best results. It will smooth out beautifully.

No Harsh Chemicals

Use a mild, plant-based detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners — they strip hemp's natural antibacterial properties.

Sustainability

Hemp & the Planet

Hemp is one of the most sustainable crops on earth. It sequesters carbon as it grows, requires no irrigation in most climates, and leaves the soil healthier than it found it. Choosing hemp isn't just a fabric choice — it's a vote for a cleaner, quieter planet.

50%
LESS WATER (Than cotton, zero irrigation in most regions)
1.63 tonnes
CARBON SEQUESTERED (Per hectare annually — fighting climate change)
100%
ZERO WASTE (Every part of the plant is used)

Captures Carbon

Hemp absorbs carbon dioxide as it grows, helping make each crop lighter on the planet.

Low Water, High Yield

Hemp needs little water and usually grows well without irrigation, making it kinder to freshwater resources.

Naturally Pest-Resistant

Hemp is naturally resistant to many pests, so it can be grown with little or no chemical pesticide.

Good for Soil

Deep hemp roots help reduce erosion and return nutrients to the soil. The fibre is also naturally biodegradable.

FAQ

Hemp Fabric — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between handloom and powerloom hemp fabric?

Handloom hemp is woven manually on a traditional loom — each metre takes more time, carries subtle texture variations, and reflects the weaver's craft. Powerloom hemp is woven on mechanised looms, producing a more uniform, consistent fabric at a faster pace. Both use the same natural hemp fibre; the difference lies in texture, production speed, and the human touch. At Moon N Lotus, we make an effort to source ethically produced GOTS Certified fabric ensuring quality and consistency.

Is hemp fabric soft to wear?

Yes — and it gets softer with every wash. Initially, hemp fabric may feel slightly textured, but with regular use and washing, it becomes increasingly soft and comfortable against the skin.

Is hemp fabric sustainable?

Hemp is one of the most sustainable natural fibres available. It grows without pesticides, uses minimal water, sequesters carbon, and is fully biodegradable — making it a far more responsible choice than cotton or synthetic fabrics.

Does hemp fabric shrink after washing?

Hemp can shrink slightly in the first wash, especially in hot water. We recommend washing in cool water (30°C or below) on a gentle cycle to maintain the fabric's shape and size.

Is hemp fabric good for sensitive skin?

Yes. Hemp is naturally hypoallergenic and free from synthetic chemicals. Its antibacterial properties also help reduce skin irritation, making it an excellent choice for sensitive or allergy-prone skin.

How is hemp fabric different from linen?

Both hemp and linen are plant-based natural fibres, but hemp is stronger, more durable, and has natural antibacterial properties. Hemp also has a lower environmental footprint — requiring less water and no pesticides compared to flax (linen).

Can hemp fabric be used in all seasons?

Absolutely. Hemp is naturally thermoregulating — it keeps you cool in summer by wicking moisture and warm in winter by retaining body heat. It's a true all-season fabric.

Is hemp fabric legal in India?

Yes. Industrial hemp fabric — used in textiles — is completely legal in India. It contains negligible THC levels and is regulated separately from cannabis. Moon N Lotus sources only certified industrial hemp for all its products.
