Everything You Need to Know About Bamboo Fabric
Bamboo fabric stands among nature's most extraordinary textiles — grown without pesticides, harvested without disturbing the plant's roots, and spun into fibres that feel softer than cotton and breathe better than linen. At Moon N Lotus, we work only with bamboo linen, crafting garments that feel as good as they do good.
Capable of growing up to 90 centimetres a day on nothing but natural rainfall, bamboo regenerates from its own root system season after season — making it one of the most renewable materials available today. It requires 200 times less water than conventional cotton to grow the same yield, and produces 35% more oxygen per hectare than an equivalent stand of trees. Once transformed into fabric, it keeps its natural antibacterial qualities — clinically shown to eliminate over 70% of bacteria that come into contact with it — drawing moisture away from the skin and keeping you comfortable from morning to night.
Where synthetic fabrics release microplastics with every wash, bamboo fabric breaks down naturally and completely — decomposing in as little as one year in soil, compared to 200+ years for polyester. Bamboo cultivation also sequesters up to 12 tonnes of CO₂ per hectare annually, making it one of the most carbon-positive crops on earth. When its life cycle ends, it returns to the earth without a trace — this is what true conscious luxury looks like: beautiful, functional, and responsible from start to finish.
Every Moon N Lotus bamboo piece is made with intention — designed to give you lasting comfort while honouring the planet it comes from. Our bamboo fabric carries a UPF 50+ rating, blocking over 97.5% of UV radiation, and its thermo-regulating properties keep you 2–3°C cooler than cotton in warm conditions and warmer in the cold.
Bamboo fabric isn't just a trend — it's a glimpse into the future of sustainable fashion, where luxury and responsibility aren't opposites but partners. From how quickly it regenerates in the field (a full harvest cycle in just 3–5 years, versus 25–70 years for hardwood trees) to how gently it returns to the soil, organic bamboo embodies circular fashion at its best. Choosing bamboo means choosing a fabric that protects your skin, respects the earth, and delivers the softness and performance you've been searching for.

Process
From Bamboo Grove to Your Wardrobe
A transparent look at the making of bamboo fabric
Step 01
Sustainably Harvested
Mature bamboo stalks are carefully selected and cut by hand, leaving the root system fully intact — so the plant regrows on its own, with no replanting and no soil disruption.
Step 02
Naturally Pulped
The harvested stalks are broken down into a soft pulp through a closed-loop process that reuses water and limits chemical use, keeping the fibre's natural integrity intact.
Step 03
Spun into Silk-Soft Fibre
This pulp is carefully extruded into fine threads and spun into yarn — the beginning of a fabric that feels remarkably smooth, breathable, and gentle against the skin.
Step 04
Woven with Intention
Every length of fabric is woven and finished without harsh dyes or synthetic treatments — staying safe for sensitive skin and gentle on the earth it came from.
Why us
Why Moon n Lotus
We were among the early Indian labels to work with certified plant-based regenerated fibres, creating thoughtful pieces from materials derived from things like rose petals, orange peels, bamboo, hemp and more. We source thoughtfully, produce in small batches and increasingly make pieces only as demand requires. Even our fabric remnants are given a new purpose — reimagined as accessories, bags, childrenswear and more. For us, conscious fashion is not about making claims. It is about making better choices, consistently.
"Soft on your skin, kind to the earth. With bamboo, you never have to choose between comfort and conscience."
— — Pamita Seth, Founder, Moon n Lotus

Care
Caring for Your Bamboo Fabric
Gentle Machine or Hand Wash
Wash in cold water (30°C or below) on a gentle cycle, or hand wash whenever possible. Use a mild, eco-friendly detergent, and avoid bleach or harsh chemicals — they weaken bamboo's natural fibres and strip away its antibacterial qualities.
Air Dry for Best Results
Lay flat or hang in the shade to dry naturally. Steer clear of tumble drying on high heat, as bamboo fibres are delicate and can shrink or lose their softness under excessive heat.
Low Heat Ironing Only
If ironing is necessary, use a low heat setting or a steam iron while the fabric is still slightly damp. Iron inside out to protect the fabric's natural surface and sheen.
Store with Care
Keep folded in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Avoid hanging for extended periods, as bamboo fabric can stretch slightly under its own weight over time.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Bamboo Fabric
How long does bamboo fabric take to biodegrade?
Bamboo fabric biodegrades in as little as one year under natural soil conditions. Compare this to polyester and other synthetic fabrics, which can take 200 years or more to break down — and release microplastics throughout that process. Choosing bamboo means your garment returns to the earth cleanly, without a trace.
What is the UV protection rating of bamboo fabric?
Bamboo fabric carries a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating of 50+, meaning it blocks over 97.5% of UV radiation. This makes it one of the most protective natural fabrics for sun exposure — significantly better than standard cotton, which typically offers a UPF of just 5–10.
Does bamboo fabric actually have antibacterial properties?
Yes — bamboo fibre contains a natural bio-agent called "bamboo kun" that gives it inherent antibacterial and antifungal properties. Studies show bamboo fabric can eliminate over 70% of bacteria that come into contact with it, even after repeated washing. This makes it naturally odour-resistant and fresher for longer.
How does bamboo fabric compare to cotton in terms of water usage?
Bamboo requires up to 200 times less water than conventional cotton to produce the same yield. Cotton is one of the most water-intensive crops in the world — a single cotton t-shirt can consume up to 2,700 litres of water to produce. Bamboo, by contrast, thrives on natural rainfall alone with zero irrigation needed.
Is bamboo fabric really eco-friendly?
Yes — bamboo is one of the most sustainable natural fibres available. It grows without pesticides, requires no irrigation beyond rainfall, and regenerates from its own roots after harvesting. When processed responsibly, bamboo fabric has a significantly lower environmental footprint than cotton or synthetic fabrics.
Is bamboo fabric soft?
Bamboo fabric is naturally smooth. Unlike cotton which can feel rough after repeated washing, bamboo retains its softness wash after wash.
Is bamboo fabric good for sensitive skin?
Absolutely. Bamboo fabric is naturally hypoallergenic and free from harsh chemicals, making it ideal for sensitive or reactive skin. Its smooth fibres don't irritate the skin the way synthetic fabrics can.
How do I wash bamboo fabric?
Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold water (30°C or below) using a mild detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners. Air dry in shade for best results — bamboo dries quickly and naturally.
Is bamboo fabric breathable?
Yes — bamboo fabric is highly breathable and moisture-wicking, making it ideal for warm climates and active wear. It regulates body temperature naturally, keeping you cool in summer and warm in cooler months.
